Become a Skipper in 5 days. Your adventure starts now.

1. What is the RYA Day Skipper

In collaboration with the Miceli Vela The RYA Day Skipper course is an intensive, practical experience that takes place entirely on board one of our sailing yachts. The sailing practice places great emphasis on the electronic navigationincluding the first notions of using the radar as an aid to navigation. Days on board are mainly dedicated to practical sessions. At the end of the course, if you pass the test, you will obtain the qualification that will enable you to gain professional recognition and start working.

Our courses are taught by certified instructors and take place monthly. The RYA Day Skipper sailing course can be the basis for your path to the Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore.

If you do not yet have enough experience at sea as a skipper, this course will help you progress. For a more detailed analysis of the topics covered and a complete presentation of the course, please visit RYA webwhere you can learn more and choose the course that suits you best.

2. What you will learn

During this five-day intensive course, you will acquire the fundamental skills to safely manage a boat and your crew. You will be taught essential manoeuvres and safety procedures, enabling you to operate with confidence and competence.

Key points of the programme include:

  • Crew ManagementYou will learn how to communicate effectively, delegate tasks and maintain a safe and collaborative working environment on board.
  • Emergency management: You will be prepared to handle critical situations, such as handling a fire, engine failure or the most important 'man overboard' manoeuvre.
  • Use of the main navigation systems: You will become familiar with modern tools such as the radar and the plotterfundamental for safe navigation.
  • Weather forecast softwareIt will know how to access and interpret weather reports to better plan your navigation.
  • Mooring and unmooring: You will develop the technique and safety needed to manoeuvre the boat in port.
  • Using nautical charts: You will learn to read and interpret nautical charts, an essential skill for navigation.

3. Your future as a Skipper

Once you have completed the course and demonstrated that you can manage a boat and crew independently, you will obtain your RYA Day Skipper qualification. This certificate is not only a recognition of your skills, but also an important opportunity. You can decide to 'endorse' (validate for professional use) your certificate for work purposes, as well as for pleasure.

If you are a professional and wish to work as a skipper, you will have to obtain the 'Commercial Endorsement' for your certificate. This will allow you to work as a skipper for Day Charter. To obtain it, you will also need a certification GMDSS SRC and the course Professional Practices and Responsibilitiesas well as certification STCW Basic Training and a medical certificate ENG1 or equivalent.

We are able to accompany you on your way, from 'competent crew' skills to Master 500gtDay Skipper, Coastal/Offshore/Ocean Yachtmaster and Master 200gt. Our training centre is highly qualified to train skippers and masters on private and commercial yachts.

RYA certifications are recognised and accepted by many flags for professional use, including the countries of the Red Ensign Groupthe United Kingdom, Malta, the Poland, San Marino and the Slovenia.
